夏深了，院子里的梧桐树撑开一片浓荫，密密匝匝的叶子把阳光筛成碎金，洒了一地。

Summer has deepened.The plane tree in the yard spreads a thick shade,its dense leaves sifting sunlight into scattered gold that spills across the ground.

蝉在枝头嘶嘶地叫，叫得人心也跟着燥起来。我搬了竹椅坐在廊下，手里摇着蒲扇，风有一搭没一搭地来，到底是凉的。

Cicadas cry shrilly from the branches,their noise stirring a restlessness in the heart.I drag a bamboo chair to sit under the eaves,waving a palm-leaf fan.The breeze comes in fits and starts,but when it comes,it is cool.

Childhood Summer Nights

想起儿时的夏天。那时候没有空调，最盼望的是卖冰棍的吆喝声。一个木箱子，裹着棉被，里面躺着几分钱一根的冰棍。咬一口，甜丝丝的凉意顺着喉咙往下走，整个人都清爽了。

I think of summers as a child.There was no air conditioning back then.What I looked forward to most was the hawker's cry selling popsicles—a wooden box wrapped in a quilt, inside which lay popsicles costing just a few cents. One bite, and the sweet, chilly coolness slipped down the throat, making the whole body feel fresh.

傍晚的时候，父亲会把竹床搬到院子里，我们躺在上面数星星。母亲摇着蒲扇，一下一下，扇走了蚊子，也扇来了凉风。萤火虫一闪一闪的，像是地上的星星。

At dusk, my father would move a bamboo bed into the yard, and we would lie on it counting stars. My mother waved her palm-leaf fan, stroke after stroke, chasing away mosquitoes and bringing a cool breeze. Fireflies flickered like stars fallen to earth.

City Summer and Its Lingering Taste

如今住在城里，窗外是空调外机嗡嗡的响声。关上门窗，把热气隔在外面，也把蝉声隔在了外面。凉是凉了，总觉着少了什么。可夏天终究是好的。黄昏时分，暑气渐退，天边烧起绯红的晚霞。买一个西瓜回来，切开，红瓤黑籽，咬一口，汁水四溢。这是夏天才有的痛快。

Now I live in the city. Outside the window, air conditioning units hum. I close the windows and doors, shutting out the heat—and the sound of cicadas as well. It is cool, yes, but something feels missing. Yet summer is still wonderful.

At dusk, the heat gradually fades, and the sky's edge burns with crimson sunset clouds.Buy a watermelon,cut it open—red flesh,black seeds.One bite,and juice overflows.This is the unbridled pleasure that only summer brings.

夜深了，月亮升起来，清辉洒在窗台上。蝉声低了下去，蛐蛐开始唱它们的歌。夏天就是这样，热闹着，也安静着。
